Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a classic musical comedy, directed by Howard Hawks. The screenplay by Charles Lederer was based a 1925 novel written by Anita Loos.
Lorelie (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy (Jane Russel) are two showgirls who set sail on a luxury liner bound for Paris, where Lorelie intends to marry millionaire Gus Esmond. En route, the girls are bedevilled by private detective Malone, hired by Esmond's father to make certain that Lorelei isn't just another gold-digger. By the time the ship reaches Paris, a missing diamond tiara lands the girls in hot water.
While Russell's down-to-earth, sharp wit has been noted by most critics, it is Monroe's turn as the gold-digging Lorelei Lee for which the film is often remembered.
The film is filled with comedic gags and musical numbers. Filmed in Technicolor, celebrated for its highly saturated colour, it is wonderful film to watch on a big screen. Especially Monroe's rendition of the song "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" and her pink dress now considered iconic.
